Lexicon – a different kind of world-building game

One of my friends just shared a game with us that I’ve never heard of before. Its called Lexicon. Its a world-building game with an interesting system. Basically, each player is a scholar. Beginning with the letter A, they go through the alphabet and write an entry about the world – or whatever it is that’s being designed. It could probably be a country, city, company or any other organization desired. I can even see it being used to write about a single person or the history of an object. They then have to add a reference to someone else’s entry in their own. Entries should be between 100-200 words long.

Once all have done the letter A, they go to B, then C, and so on. At the end a world (or whatever type of organization was decided on) is written. The initial stuff (the letter A) of course won’t have anything it can “link” to, since that’s where you’re starting from scratch. You can include “ghost” links, which people can expand on later. Its recommended that it be played online in a Wiki format, but I’m sure that there are other text-based formats that could work as well.

I really like the idea of it a lot. I’m going to see if we can run it. If people focus on 1 letter per day, then it will end in 26 days. It might actually be interesting to do for something like NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month).
