D&D 5e impressions from a 2e gamer (part 2)

So, in-between general online exploration at night, I read a little more of the D&D 5e Player’s Handbook. I went through the classes section, and its really interesting. To recap, I haven’t gamed since 2nd edition, so all the stuff that most of you current gamers lived through is mostly retrospective for me. With that in mind, I was speaking about 5e with a friend on a group I started on Facebook. She basically told me that it was geared towards fans of 2nd edition, and not really knowing the nuances of 3rd, 3.5 or 4th, I agree with her. As a former 2nd edition player, I’m really enjoying what I see so far.

An interesting thing to me right now is the magic-user classes. In 2e, we basically had generalist mages and specialist wizards who focused their studies on one of the nine schools of magic. Each carried a spellbook and measured magical ability via their number of spell slots, which increased with level and determined how many spells of each level could be cast per day. They were also puny fighters who couldn’t wear much armor and didn’t always remember that the pointy end of a sword was held towards the enemy.
