Open World Closed Book Gaming

Great post with some guidelines for somewhat improvisational gaming. Years ago, when I ran stuff, this is the kind of thinking that drove many of my sessions.

Tabletop Role playing offers something that nothing else can, the freedom for players to tell their own story. The best way I’ve found to do this is open world, improvisational gaming. Here are a few of the technique I use to allow me to run open world games.

    1. Goodbye DM screen, hello notebook. Whenever I sit down to run a game I have a three ring binder with some sheets of paper in it. The pages begin the game empty, save for maybe a few names of NPCs, places, and factions. But it serves a more devious purpose, it buys me time. Whenever the players hit me with a question I’m not ready for I consult the notebook, roll a few dice and return with an answer.
